CORALS 4 CONSERVATION
25/11/11

World of Fishes are very proud to be the first UK retailer to link up with Corals 4 Conservation in Fiji. This is a ‘Fair Trade’ relationship and is the first time this has been tried with live coral anywhere in the world. The idea behind it is that the reef becomes a valuable asset to the villagers in Fiji, encouraging them to look after it and not allow it to be destroyed for more destructive industries e.g. building materials etc. All corals exported are grown from cuttings of mother corals, grown on in vast coral gardens and then shipped to us. We hope that we can grow this relationship to allow more and more species to be sustainably and ethically sourced.

AQUARIUM GARDENING ARRIVING AT WORLD OF FISHES SOON!

25/11/11

We are pleased to have been chosen as one of a select number of stores to offer the new ‘aquarium gardening’ concept. The programme offers a range of freshwater planted aquaria themes which can be bought as a complete package of plants. The kit will come complete with a schematic diagram akin to a painting by numbers scene, enabling you to easily achieve the chosen display. Each scene is rated in terms of ease of keeping, suggested supplements, whether C02 is required etc. We will be offering these supplements, tools and the new Via-Lite fluorescent bulbs too. Watch out for the DVD which will be in store soon!

MARINE SECTION IMPROVEMENTS
25/11/11

We have been busy making a series of improvements in our marine room. The new critter system is now up and running and will be stocked in the coming days, the large coral tank has been divided, now running as two separate systems giving us the space and ability to offer SPS, LPS, soft corals, frags, anemones and a larger selection of clean-up crew.

Thank you for bearing with us while this work has been going on, we have tried to keep disruption to a minimum but have had to run stocks a bit lower than normal at times to enable us to switch systems etc. We hope to be back to full stock levels soon!

RUNNING 4 REEFS - UPDATE
25/11/11

Daz has been chipping away at the 1250 mile target he set himself as the ‘Barrier Reef Challenge’ in aid of Shark and Coral conservation. The current mileage covered stands at 748.6 miles (1197.76km)

Some big races are booked for next year including a 150 mile Jungle marathon in the Peruvian rainforest after which he is then going directly from Heathrow to Birmingham to run from there back to London (145 miles) in the Grand Union Canal Race.

The effort is paying off though, recent shark fin bans have been put into place in California, Toronto and Ontario, a proposed EU ban and sanctuaries in the Marshall Islands, Palau, and several other South Pacific communities are huge steps in the right direction to stop shark finning for good.

We are delighted to announce that we have linked up with The Shark And Coral Conservation Trust (Registered Charity No. 1121609) as our designated charity. This means that all in store fundraisers e.g. the charity tank, donations, raffles etc will all be donated to them.
We are also backing Daryl's 'Running 4 Reefs' fund. Daryl is running a series of Marathons and Ultra Marathons over the coming months / years to raise awareness of the current catastrophic problems which are facing the worlds coral reefs and shark populations, again 100% of all funds raised will be going directly to the SCCT.
